Saint Donatus, Iowa is a small town located in Jackson County, Iowa. The town was founded in 1846 by a group of Luxembourg immigrants, making it one of the oldest Luxembourg settlements in the United States. The town was named after Saint Donatus of Muenstereifel, a Roman soldier who was martyred for his Christian faith in the 4th century.
One unique fact about Saint Donatus is that it is home to the world's largest wooden nickel. The giant wooden nickel was built in 2006 to commemorate the town's annual wooden nickel festival, which celebrates the town's history and heritage. The festival features live music, food vendors, and a parade, drawing visitors from all over the region.
In addition to the wooden nickel, Saint Donatus is also known for its historic church, St. Donatus Catholic Church. The church was built in 1868 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The church's stunning architecture and beautiful stained glass windows make it a popular destination for visitors and tourists.
