Carbon Cliff is a small village located in Rock Island County, Illinois. The village was originally known as "Pig's Eye" due to the large number of pigs that were raised in the area. In 1906, the name was changed to Carbon Cliff due to the coal mining industry that was prevalent in the region.
One unique fact about Carbon Cliff is that it is home to the shortest incorporated railroad in the United States. The Carbon Cliff Short Line Railroad was only 50 feet long and was used to transport coal from the mines to the nearby Mississippi River.
Another interesting fact about Carbon Cliff is that it is the birthplace of the famous baseball player, Joe Girardi. Girardi played for several Major League Baseball teams and later went on to become a successful manager, leading the New York Yankees to a World Series championship in 2009.
Today, Carbon Cliff is a quiet village with a population of around 2,000 residents. The village is known for its small-town charm and friendly community atmosphere. Visitors to Carbon Cliff can enjoy the scenic views of the Mississippi River and explore the historic sites that showcase the village's rich coal mining heritage.
