Durango, Iowa is a small town located in Dubuque County with a population of just over 20,000 residents. The town was founded in 1833 and was originally known as "New Diggings" due to the lead mining that took place in the area. In 1857, the town was officially renamed Durango after the city in Mexico.
One unique fact about Durango is that it is home to the Fenelon Place Elevator, which is the world's shortest and steepest scenic railway. The elevator was built in 1882 by J.K. Graves, a local banker who wanted an easier way to travel between his home on top of the bluff and his office downtown. Today, the elevator is a popular tourist attraction and offers stunning views of the Mississippi River and surrounding countryside.
Another interesting aspect of Durango is its annual Catfish Festival, which has been held every summer since 1976. The festival features live music, food vendors, a parade, and of course, plenty of catfish dishes to enjoy. It is a beloved tradition in the town and draws visitors from all over the state.
