Naplate, Illinois is a small village located in LaSalle County, with a population of just over 500 residents. The village was founded in 1882 and was originally known as "Hardscrabble" due to the difficult terrain in the area. In 1883, the name was changed to Naplate, which is a combination of the words "Naples" and "Plateau." One unique fact about Naplate is that it is home to the historic Starved Rock Lock and Dam, which was built in 1933 and is still in operation today. The lock and dam are part of the Illinois Waterway system and provide a vital link for commercial and recreational boating in the region. Another interesting feature of Naplate is the Naplate Blast Furnace, which was built in 1868 and was one of the first blast furnaces in the state of Illinois. The furnace was used to produce iron for the construction of railroads and other infrastructure projects in the area. Naplate is also known for its beautiful natural surroundings, including the nearby Starved Rock State Park, which offers hiking, fishing, and camping opportunities for visitors. The village is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts looking to explore the scenic beauty of the Illinois River Valley.
